If you were an indexer working in the middle of the Sixteenth Century, here is what you would need according to an article by Frederick L. Brown:
"In the middle of the sixteenth century, before sitting down to his task, Conrad Gesner[1] assembled the following items: glue, scissors, string, paper, pen and ink. We know these materials were associated with the indexer's craft from the lengthy discussion on indexing techniques contained in Gesner's Pandectae, published in 1548."
